Chiusi is
the nearest town to Pomelato. It is an ancient Etruscan town with a
famous Etruscan museum, a very old cathedral (founded in the 4th century),
and a Roman water tower. Nice to wander round and not too touristy
even in high season. There are 7 or 8 restaurants.
Citta della Pieve
– a beautiful medieval brick hill town which is 9km away. There is a
cathedral and several paintings by Perugino (the local Renaissance master
painter).
Castiglione del Lago
– a very attractive town with a castle on Lake Trasimeno, with beautiful
views, good restaurants and a number of shops selling regional delicacies.
This is about 12km away.
Lake Trasimeno
is the largest lake in mainland Italy, in a beautiful setting surrounded
by hills. There are beaches and watersports here, and you can take boat
trips to various islands on the lake.
Montepulciano –
this famous Tuscan hill town, with equally famous wine (the Vino Nobile
di Montepulciano) is 20km from Pomelato.
Assisi - about
an hour’s drive from Pomelato, this hill town known to all as the birthplace
of St Francis is also renowned for the beauty of its pink and white
marble buildings and for the frescoes by Cimabue and Giotto in the Basilica.
Perugia - the regional capital is about 40km
away. One of Italy’s best preserved medieval towns, the birthplace of
Perugino and an artistic and cultural capital for many centuries.
Cetona – only
10km away, a Tuscan hill town with an elegant piazza and a number of
ancient buildings, with spectacular views beyond to Monte Cetona. Also
visit Pippo Ceramiche on the main square for a wide selection of ceramics
designed and made on the premises.
Panicale – considered
one of the most attractive Italian villages, a small mediaeval hill
town whose walls form a complete fortress, with stunning views of Lake
Trasimeno from a belvedere outside the walls. One of Perugino’s masterpieces,
The Martyrdom of St Sebastian, is to be found here in the Chiesa S.
Sebastiano (visits are conducted by the tourist office at 10.10, 11.30,
16.00, 17.00 and 18.00 daily).
Further afield but all within easy striking distance: Cortona, Siena,
Montalcino, Florence, Gubbio, Orvieto, Arezzo, San Sepolcro, Anghiari…the
list goes on!
