Chiusi is the nearest town to Pomelato. It is an ancient Etruscan town with a famous Etruscan museum, a very old cathedral (founded in the 4th century), and a Roman water tower.  Nice to wander round and not too touristy even in high season.  There are 7 or 8 restaurants.

Citta della Pieve – a beautiful medieval brick hill town which is 9km away. There is a cathedral and several paintings by Perugino (the local Renaissance master painter).

Castiglione del Lago – a very attractive town with a castle on Lake Trasimeno, with beautiful views, good restaurants and a number of shops selling regional delicacies. This is about 12km away.

Lake Trasimeno is the largest lake in mainland Italy, in a beautiful setting surrounded by hills. There are beaches and watersports here, and you can take boat trips to various islands on the lake.

Montepulciano – this famous Tuscan hill town, with equally famous wine (the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano) is 20km from Pomelato.

Assisi - about an hour’s drive from Pomelato, this hill town known to all as the birthplace of St Francis is also renowned for the beauty of its pink and white marble buildings and for the frescoes by Cimabue and Giotto in the Basilica.

Perugia
- the regional capital is about 40km away. One of Italy’s best preserved medieval towns, the birthplace of Perugino and an artistic and cultural capital for many centuries.

Cetona – only 10km away, a Tuscan hill town with an elegant piazza and a number of ancient buildings, with spectacular views beyond to Monte Cetona. Also visit Pippo Ceramiche on the main square for a wide selection of ceramics designed and made on the premises.

Panicale – considered one of the most attractive Italian villages, a small mediaeval hill town whose walls form a complete fortress, with stunning views of Lake Trasimeno from a belvedere outside the walls. One of Perugino’s masterpieces, The Martyrdom of St Sebastian, is to be found here in the Chiesa S. Sebastiano (visits are conducted by the tourist office at 10.10, 11.30, 16.00, 17.00 and 18.00 daily).

Further afield but all within easy striking distance: Cortona, Siena, Montalcino, Florence, Gubbio, Orvieto, Arezzo, San Sepolcro, Anghiari…the list goes on!

There are a number of music festivals which take place in the summer months, including classical music in Cortona (the Tuscan Sun Festival) and an international jazz festival in Città di Castello.
